Is there a difference between raised without antibiotics and organic chicken?
Yes, there is! Raised without antibiotics chicken was never treated with antibiotics in any way (including water, feed or injections) from hatch to processing. Organic chicken was raised with a certified organic feed containing no animal by-products or antibiotics, and supplements like vitamins must be approved by a CFIA-accredited certification body.
What is the difference between humanely raised vs. certified humane?
Our humanely raised standard adheres to the Canadian National Farm Animal Care Council codes and the Chicken Farmers of Canada’s Animal Care on-farm program. This program has been developed, implemented and independently audited by Canadians for Canadians. A certified humane label is a voluntary US certification standard from the Humane Farm Animal Care non-profit organization.
Does chicken have any added growth hormones or steroids?
No, the use of hormones was not used in raising the chicken. In Canada, use of hormones has been banned since the 1960s, so this applies to all chickens sold in Canada.
Do chickens live in cages?
The chickens are able to freely roam comfortably within the climate-controlled barn, with access to food, water and social play at all times.
With Maple Leaf Prime® Raised without Antibiotics (RWA), does that mean regular Maple Leaf Prime® Raised on Canadian Farms chicken has antibiotics?
Any use of antibiotics is withdrawn from the chicken’s feed a specified number of days prior to processing, which ensures there is no residue of antibiotics present in the meat. Keep in mind that antibiotics are only used when necessary for the chicken’s welfare. Its use is controlled by the CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency) and veterinarians.
What are the benefits of Maple Leaf Prime® Raised without Antibiotics (RWA) chicken versus Prime Raised on Canadian Farms chicken?
Maple Leaf Prime® RWA chicken ensures that the product was never raised with antibiotics, and the chicken was fed a vegetable grain fed diet with no animal by-products. Chickens raised without antibiotics and conventional chicken (e.g. Prime Raised on Canadian farms chicken) are raised in separate barns, however, our animal welfare standards and priorities in raising both chickens are not different.
Where does Maple Leaf Prime® manufacture or process its products?
We manufacture most of our products in company-owned and operated facilities in Canada. Maple Leaf® has multiple state of the art manufacturing facilities where we take pride in employing the highest safety measures and quality controls.
How do you maintain a high level of quality ingredients from your suppliers?
We are committed to ongoing reviews with our supply chain protocols and work only with suppliers that meet Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) standards for food safety. We audit our primary suppliers directly to verify that our standards are being met.
Where does your breading, batter and other ingredients come from?
We source our ingredients from a number of suppliers to ensure we provide consistently high quality, great tasting and affordable products. Ingredients such as batter, breading, seasoning and other ingredients are sourced mainly from companies based in Canada and the United States and are subject to audits to verify that our high quality and safety standards are being met.
Where can I find preparation and/or cooking instructions for your products?
Cooking instructions, including recommended cook time is printed on the packaging of all of our frozen products. In addition, you can find safe handling instructions and tips for raw poultry handling on our fresh products as well.
